Why Free, Third-Spaces Matter

There is something profoundly human about gathering around a table with other people and creating something together. Whether it's sharing a paintbrush, laughing over an ugly drawing, or simply enjoying a conversation with someone you might never have met otherwise, these moments remind us that community isn't built by chance—it is built through shared experiences! In the modern day and rapidly growing cities, however, those opportunities can become surprisingly rare. As neighborhoods expand and life becomes busier, many people find themselves surrounded by others while still feeling isolated. That is why free communal spaces matter so deeply.
At Holy Smocks, we believe everyone deserves a place where they can belong without the pressure to spend money or fit a certain mold. Art has a remarkable way of bringing people together across generations, backgrounds, and skill levels. It invites conversation, encourages vulnerability, and creates friendships that extend far beyond a single evening of painting or crafting. We have watched strangers become familiar faces, neighbors become friends, and hesitant first-time visitors become regular members of our growing community. Those connections are the true masterpiece.
Our mission is only possible because of the incredible support of our local community. Rather than existing apart from local businesses, we strive to strengthen them by partnering with cafés, plant nurseries, and even tattoo shops and other gathering places that generously open their doors to us. Together, we help transform these businesses into vibrant "third spaces"—places that aren't home or work, but somewhere people can simply exist, create, and connect. Every event supports not only our mission but also the small businesses that make our community unique.
While we are proud of what Holy Smocks has become, our dream reaches even further. One day, we hope to expand Holy Smocks by having events in other growing cities too! We believe that investing in people through art creates stronger neighborhoods, healthier communities, and a culture where everyone has a place at the table.
If you've ever wished there were more places where people could simply gather without expectation, you're not alone. We believe those places are worth building, protecting, and growing. Every person who attends an event, volunteers their time, shares our story, donates supplies, or supports our mission helps make that vision a reality. Together, we aren't just making art—we're creating a community where everyone belongs, one smock at a time.
